At Hurley Architects, we design buildings that work with their environment — not against it. Every project begins with careful analysis of climate, ecology, and the people who will inhabit the space.
Residential Architecture
We work with homeowners at every stage — from early feasibility through to construction documentation and site observation. Whether you’re building a new home, extending an existing one, or thinking about how your property can be more resilient to a changing climate, we’ll guide you through a process that is thorough, collaborative, and grounded in good design.
• New homes & custom builds
• Extensions & alterations
• Flood resilience upgrades
• Feasibility studies & concept design
Commercial & Hospitality
We have delivered commercial projects ranging from craft brewery fitouts to office renovations across South East Queensland. We understand that commercial clients need design outcomes that are functional, on budget, and built to last.
• Hospitality & retail fitouts
• Office & workplace design
• Mixed-use developments
Flood Resilience & Climate Adaptation
Following the 2022 Brisbane floods, Hurley Architects partnered with the Brisbane Sustainability Agency to deliver flood resilience initiatives across the city. We have since assessed and documented over 50 community facilities and 40 residential homes, helping owners understand their risk and take practical steps to protect their properties.

How we work:
1. Initial Consultation & Pre-Design
We meet to understand your project, your site, your budget, and your aspirations. This initial chat is obligation-free.
Once we decide to work together, this phase is also about locking in your formal "brief" and organizing any existing site information, like land surveys or soil tests, so we have a solid foundation to start drawing.
2. Concept Design
We investigate your site and develop design concepts that respond to its ecology, orientation, and microclimate. We present options, look at a preliminary estimate of costs, and refine the design together.
3. Design Development
The preferred concept is developed into a more detailed design, locking in materials, finishes, and updating the cost estimates.
This is also where we start coordinating with other specialized consultants—like structural engineers—to make sure the beautiful design is actually buildable and structurally sound.
4. Approvals & Documentation
We take the headache out of the paperwork. We'll produce the necessary drawings for council approval, and then develop the highly detailed construction drawings and specifications.
We usually split this into two parts: Town Planning (getting Development Approval/DA from the council) and Construction Documentation (the nitty-gritty details, dimensions, and building codes needed for the builder to actually construct it).
5. Tendering & Construction
We assist with builder selection by putting the project out to tender to get competitive quotes. During the build, we provide site observation to ensure the design intent is achieved.
We always advocate to remain part of the project during Contract Administration. If you opt for full service, we don't just watch—we act as your independent rep. We administer the building contract, assess the builder's monthly invoices to ensure you're only paying for work that's actually done, answer site queries, and manage the final defects list before you move in.
