From Soil to Sanctuary: Designing a Home Using the Colours of Your Land

Our wonderful clients in Tallebudgera Valley were the first to experience our new Site Wandering & Gathering activity.

During this unique process, we explore the site together, gathering special native plants. The dye colors extracted from this local flora then form the foundation of a custom interior colour palette, inspiring a place based design scheme for their new home.

A Process of Discovery, Adventure, and Nature Connection

This activity is about discovery, adventure, and falling deeply in love with the nature that surrounds you. It taps into the creative process of placemaking to inspire ongoing land stewardship.

Our clients shared that they were deeply moved by how this process connected them more intimately to their surroundings. They were delighted by the idea that we could translate the ancient wisdom of their specific site directly into the design of their sanctuary.

Gathering in Reciprocity

For this biophilic process to work, a two-way exchange between the ecosystem and the gathering children needed to be established. We provided our clients with mindful guidelines to enable a true dialogue between the plants and the gatherers.

To transform this from a human-led endeavor into a creative collaboration with the plant realm, we practice the following steps:

• Ask for Permission: Approach the plant with respect and state your intention.

• Listen Closely: Tune in to feel for a subtle ‘yes’ or ‘no’ from the plant.

• Give in Return: Offer something back to the earth to honor the exchange (such as water, a song, or a physical token of gratitude).

• Seek Guidance: Ask the plant realm how its colors and essence can best serve the home.

Tuning in to the distinct difference between taking without permission versus being guided and welcomed to receive changes everything. It turns a simple site visit into an act of collaboration with the earth.
